Orthodontics is a dental specialty focused on aligning the teeth on the jawbone in a functional and aesthetically pleasing way. It also evaluates the jaw–face relationship as a whole and includes diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to achieve proper bite alignment. Additionally, it addresses facial growth modification, an area known as dentofacial orthopedics.
Misalignment of the teeth and jaws is quite common among the general population. Studies have shown that in some societies, nearly 50% of the population may need orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatments are performed by specialists known as orthodontists. Contrary to popular belief, orthodontic treatment is not only for children or young individuals. Today, adults and even elderly patients can undergo orthodontic care. Treatment plans are created based on the individual’s needs and may involve either fixed or removable (clear aligners or appliances) options.
Fixed Orthodontic Treatment / Removable Orthodontic Treatment
Fixed orthodontic treatment involves the use of brackets, which may be made of metal or ceramic. Ceramic brackets are often preferred for their more aesthetic appearance due to their tooth-colored design. In addition to fixed braces, removable appliances (such as retainers or plates) can also be used when appropriate. The choice between fixed and removable treatment depends on the specific needs of the case and is determined by the orthodontist.
How long does orthodontic / braces treatment take?
The duration of orthodontic or braces treatment varies from person to person. Factors such as the patient's age, the severity of the dental crowding, and whether the problem is purely dental or also skeletal (related to the jawbones) influence the timeline. In some cases, treatment can be completed with minimal intervention, while more complex cases may require a longer duration.
